At 6:30 a.m. this morning, Radio Aftonbladet went live. Alex Letic and Linda Hjertén were the first voices to welcome listeners to Sweden’s first commercial news radio station—and throughout the day, the entire editorial team will take over, bringing news, sports, entertainment, and music right up until the evening’s final broadcast.

For the first time, listeners can now follow Aftonbladet’s news feed as a live radio broadcast—in the car, at work, and on the go.

“This is a historic day. Eight months ago, we submitted our application to launch Sweden’s first commercial news radio station. Today, it’s actually on the air. Radio Aftonbladet aims to make it easy to stay up to date with the day’s news, with fast-paced journalism, strong personalities, and a tone that feels warm and personal,” says Lotta Folcker, publisher at Aftonbladet.

Radio Aftonbladet is built around live journalism: when something happens, the station is there with real-time updates, explanations, and reactions. The station combines news, sports, entertainment, and music and is aimed at a broad audience aged 25–55, with its core audience in the 30–49 age group. The promise to listeners is simple: they’ll always be up to date—and it’ll never be boring.

As of today, Radio Aftonbladet is an integral part of Aftonbladet’s journalistic operations. The radio editorial team works side by side with the newsroom and the breaking news desk, which monitor developments around the clock. It is this close collaboration that makes live journalism possible. During major news events, coverage can be bolstered by Schibsted’s combined editorial resources.

– It feels fantastic to go live with the whole team on site and the entire Aftonbladet behind us. We’ve built a newsroom with some of the country’s most experienced radio and news journalists, and now we finally get to meet our listeners. This is Aftonbladet in audio—in content, pace, and tone,” says Caroline Kernen, Aftonbladet’s new head of radio and podcasts.

At the same time, Radio Aftonbladet means that audio will play an even greater role in Schibsted’s overall media offering, alongside text and video.

“With Radio Aftonbladet, we’re strengthening our offering and can engage our audience throughout the media day—via text, video, and audio. For our advertisers, this means even more opportunities to create relevance and impact in some of the Nordic region’s strongest media environments,” says Joakim Flodin, CEO of Schibsted Marketing Services.
